Venice Commission president: Ukraine should review lustration law
KYIV. Feb 3 (Interfax) - Gianni Buquicchio, the president of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), believes Ukraine should suspend the enforcement of its lustration legislation as it should be reviewed and possibly refined, the Ukrainian presidential press service reported following President Petro Poroshenko's meeting with Buquicchio.
"The Venice Commission president expressed the opinion that the lustration process should be suspended and the relevant law reworked first," the press service said on Tuesday.
In its current shape, the lustration law is "bad" and the Venice Commission is very critical about it, Buquicchio was reported to say.
"But we succeeded in our discussions with your representatives, your Minister for Justice and agreed to work together in order to improve the law and put it in conformity with the European standards," the Ukrainian presidential press service quoted Buquicchio as saying.
The Venice Commission is ready to help Ukraine draw up the necessary bills, Buquicchio said. "We will work as fast as possible," he said, according to the press service.
A delegation of Venice Commission experts will arrive in Ukraine next week to hold a number of meetings and address the matter, including at the Ukrainian Justice Ministry, he said.
Poroshenko said in reply that the opinion of Venice Commission experts is very important to Ukraine.
