Kazakhstan and U.S. to bolster cooperation in combating extremism and terror

ASTANA. Feb 19 (Interfax) - Kazakh Prosecutor General Askhat Daulbayev has met with Counselor to the U.S. Secretary of State Thomas Shannon and Administrator of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Michele Leonhart, the Kazakh Prosecutor General's Office said in a press release on Thursday.

During his visit to the United States, Daulbayev and Shannon exchanged opinions on ways to further promote cooperation between the two countries in responding to challenges and threats that face the world today, it said.

"The parties discussed steps to bolster cooperation in the fight against extremism and terrorism, the protection of human rights, as well as the upcoming summit, which is expected to offer a one-of-a-kind opportunity to find common ground and formulate joint measures to combat violent extremism," the Prosecutor's Office said.

The meeting also addressed the need to expand the contractual and legal framework between Kazakhstan and the U.S.

The work on the two countries' treaty on legal assistance in criminal matters is now in its final stages, and the signing of this document will give an extra impetus to the development of judicial cooperation between Kazakhstan and Russia, the Prosecutor's Office said.

Dauldayev's meeting with Leonhart addressed issues concerning bilateral cooperation in combating drug trafficking. Joint operations aimed at detecting drug smuggling routes have produced good results, the sides said.

"The parties reaffirmed their readiness to further consolidate efforts to fight cross-border drug crime and promptly exchange information and work-related experience," according to the press release.
