Russia doubles supply of new radar systems for Aerospace Defense Troops in 2015
MOSCOW. Feb 19 (Interfax-AVN) - In 2015 Russia's Aerospace Defense Troops (VKO) will get twice as many new radar systems as it did in 2014, the Defense Ministry said.
"This year the number of new radar systems entering service in the air defense and missile defense command of the VKO troops will double. These will be automatic control systems for the Fundament, Podlyot-K, VVO (all-altitude detector) models, the Test trainer system and others," the ministry said in a statement obtained by Interfax on Thursday.
The aim of the renewal is "to provide air defense for Moscow and the Central Industrial District," spokesperson said.
With the arrival of new-generation radar systems which can detect a broad class of targets, including high-altitude and high-speed ones, "by 2016 the type of normally purchased radar and air defense systems could be more than halved, and further reduced by a factor of four as of 2021," the spokesperson said.
"This will allow to significantly increase the repairability of the new systems, not least at the expense of unification of replaceable elements and modules, and to stop using radar systems of previous generations, once they have used their resource," the spokesperson said.
In 2014, about ten new-generation radio electronic systems entered service in the radio engineering units and VKO schools, including radar systems such as Nebo-M, Podlyot-K and VVO, the Test trainer and several others, the spokesperson said.
