Kyiv proposes first sending peacekeepers, then police mission to Donbas - foreign minister

KYIV. Feb 21 (Interfax) - Ukraine needs a peacekeeping mission sent to the conflict area in the eastern part of the country to de-escalate the conflict, and after a stable ceasefire is observed by both parties, a police mission could be sent to Ukrainian territory, the Apostrof web publication quoted Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin as saying on Ukrainian television.

The UN Security Council will begin consultations on sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine on Monday, February 23, Klimkin said.

If the Security Council makes a positive decision on the matter, a peacekeeping mission could start working either under the UN or under the EU auspices or even in a mixed format, Klimkin said.
