Sakhalin region governor charged with taking large bribes

MOSCOW. March 13 (Interfax) - Sakhalin Region Governor Alexander Khoroshavin has been charged with accepting payoffs from regional enterprises, Russian Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told Interfax on Friday.

"The official combined income earned by the governor's family in the past four years, when real estate was mainly purchased, does not exceed 50 million rubles. However, the price of these properties and confiscated valuables is much higher than this figure," he said.

Investigators believe that the governor could have bought these items using numerous payoffs from enterprises and organizations in the region, Markin said.

"Khoroshavin has been charged with accepting very large bribes," he added.
