Northern Fleet starts shipping supplies for Arctic infrastructure
MOSCOW. March 13 (Interfax-AVN) - Around 50,000 tonnes of various supplies will be delivered to the Arctic region to develop Northern Fleet (NF) infrastructure there, NF spokesman 1st Captain Vadim Serga said.
"We are planning a total of 12 shipments to the archipelagoes of Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya, Severnaya Zemlya and New Siberian Islands throughout this year," Serga told Interfax-AVN on Frida.
The icebreaker "50 Let Pobedy" (50 Years of Victory) has begun navigation in northern parts of the Barents Sea towards the Alexandra Land to clear path for the Mikhail Somov diesel-electric propulsion ship, he said. Also, a diesel icebreaker, Captain Drantisyn, will escort the Yury Arshenevsky motor ship towards the Franz Josef Land archipelago over the next few days.
"The ships will deliver building materials, equipment, fuel and food supplies to the Arctic islands. In all, some 50,000 tonnes of various supplies are due to be sent for various purposes to develop the NF infrastructure in the Arctic throughout 2015," Serga said.
