Ukrainian military promise to punish culprits of deadly road accident in Kostiantynivka

KYIV. March 17 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian Armed Forces command has promised that the people responsible for the road accident in Kostiantynivka, in which a child was killed, will be punished.

"A road accident occurred in Kostiantynivka yesterday, An armored vehicle went out of control and drove onto the pavement. A girl named Polina, 8, was killed. Her mother and another young child were hospitalized and they are now safe. The tow servicemen who were in the armored vehicle have been detained. Military prosecutors, Interior Ministry bodies, and local authorities have launched an investigation into the child's death. The commander of the unit where the servicemen were serving has been suspended from service for the period of the investigation, which is under the personal control of the main military prosecutor and the president of Ukraine," Lysenko told a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday.

"The Ukrainian Armed Forces command extends its condolences to the victims and promises that the people responsible for this tragedy, including the servicemen and their commanders, will be punished," Lysenko said.

Lysenko said, citing Oleksandr Kikhtenko, the head of the Donetsk region's administration, that the victims will be paid compensation by the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

According to earlier reports, a serviceman from a Ukrainian military unit lost control of the vehicle he was driving and ran over passers-by in the city of Kostiantynivka, Donetsk region, on March 16. A woman and a child were hurt in the road accident. The girl, who was aged 8, died of the injuries.

The online publication novosti.dn.ua reported that some 100 people conducted a picket near the dormitory of an industrial vocational school in Kostiantynivka, where the Ukrainian military live, to protest the incident. "The crowd broke windows and set fire to some tires," the report says.

The head of the Donetsk police said the two servicemen involved in the accident have been detained.
