Ivanishvili: Saakashvili-led party remains in politics
TBILISI. March 23 (Interfax) - Bidzina Ivanishvili, former prime minister of Georgia, said he believes the party United National Movement led by Mikhail Saakashvili, which has recently drawn 5,000-7,000 people to a rally, has shown that it remains active in politics.
"By drawing 5,000-7,000 people to a rally the party led by Saakashvili showed that it is still alive. They demanded the resignation of the nationally elected government without any grounds," Ivanishvili said on Georgian GDS television channel on Sunday.
Ivanishvili said representatives of the former ruling party had ideas that they may get back into power.
"They think some people will follow them. I don't think society has forgotten about the crimes committed by Saakashvili and people close to him," Ivanishvili said.
Supporters of Saakashvili have recently gathered in Tbilisi's central Freedom Square to demand the resignation of the government. The organizers of the rally said the rally had 50,000 participants, but independent Georgian experts said it only had 8,000-10,000 participants.
The United National Movement leaders said at the rally protests demanding the government's resignation will be held on a permanent basis and a collection of signatures in support of the government's resignation will begin in the nearest future.
