U.S. violates Russia-NATO Founding Act by deploying arms in Eastern Europe - Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. March 26 (Interfax) - Russia views the deployment of U.S. weapons and military hardware in Eastern Europe as violating the Russia-NATO Founding Act's provisions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

"I'll remind you that, in line with the Founding Act, the alliance committed itself to refraining from deploying significant military forces in Eastern Europe on a permanent basis," Lukashevich said at a news briefing in Moscow on Thursday.

"We've been told now that the deployment of 220 U.S. armored vehicles in this region's countries would be called a continuous rotating presence, which presumably does not go against the commitments under the Founding Act," he said.

"In our view, this is yet another attempt to circumvent this crucial document, because, in military sense, there is little difference between such presence and the permanent stationing," Lukashevich said.
