Ukrainian PM pledges high salaries to investigators probing corruption crimes

KYIV. March 29 (Interfax) - Investigators probing high-profile corruption crimes will have their monthly salaries increased to 30,000 hryvni, said Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

"We are setting very high salaries for investigators probing high-profile crimes. Interior Minister Arsen Avakov has proposed setting salaries for them at 30,000 hryvni. I will make 30,000 hryvni available to each investigator who will fight the corrupt mafia in Ukraine," Yatsenyuk said in an interview with ICTV television on Sunday evening.

He said he inquired during the Interior Ministry's senior officials meeting about the salaries due to investigators probing corruption cases and learned that they only get 2,300 hryvni a month.

"It is hard to run effective probes into corruption crimes receiving such a salary," he said, adding that funds have been made available to increase investigators' salaries.

"The government is fighting resolutely against corruption which in fact did not disappear after the revolution," Yatsenyuk said.
