Resolution signed on restructuring debt of 71 Russian regions - Medvedev
GORKI. March 30 (Interfax) - An order has been signed to restructure the debt of 71 Russian regions, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said at a meeting with his deputies.
"I have signed a resolution to restructure the regions' debt as concerns budgetary loans," he said.
"It's not easy for anyone in the current financial situation, the debt burden the regions have is a particular problem," Medvedev added.
He said he signed this resolution in order to fix this, as well as improve the balance and strength of the regions' budgets.
Medvedev noted that this partially concerned money that was given to build and reconstruct public roadways.
The regions have to be given an extension, he said, adding that he hoped the Russian federal subjects would be able to at least partially settle their debt in the period prescribed by documentation - 2025-2034.
"Advance debt repayment is also possible if the regions are capable and willing to do this," Medvedev said, adding that the Finance Ministry will have to sign the additional agreements and organize this work.
