Peskov: Nemtsov memorial an issue to be tacked by Moscow officials, not Kremlin

MOSCOW. March 30 (Interfax) - Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the issue of setting up a memorial where opposition politician Boris Nemtsov was killed is within the competence of the Moscow authorities, not the presidential administration.

"Whether or not memorial plaques should be or should no be opened, or monuments set up, etc. is entirely within the competence of the city authorities," he said.

Peskov also said that he finds it appropriate for the city authorities to tidy up the place where Boris Nemtsov was killed and where Muscovites have organized the so-called people's memorial.

"The city authorities are doing the right thing maintaining hygienic order there. Even flowers may be fresh and not quite fresh. The city is doing the right thing tidying up the place," Peskov said.

He remarked that Moskvoretsky Bridge has itself a status of cultural and historical importance.

"It is not just a passageway. It is a bridge that has a special status from the point of view of cultural-historical heritage. The city authorities are quite right while tidying up the place," Peskov said.
