U.S. aligned on goal of DPRK denuclearization - diplomat

MOSCOW. April 2 (Interfax) - The United States remains aligned on the goal of DPRK denuclearization, press secretary of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow William Stevens told Interfax.

"Russia is a major stakeholder in the international nonproliferation regime. We remain aligned on the goal of DPRK denuclearization. We will continue to closely coordinate with our allies and partners, including Russia, to counter - whether through persuasion or pressure - the threat to global security posed by the DPRK's nuclear and ballistic missile programs," he told Interfax.

U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy Sung Kim was in Moscow on Wednesday. He met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov and other Russian officials to discuss a wide range of issues related to North Korea.

"The United States is committed to working with our partners and allies in the region to achieve consensus on the terms for authentic and credible negotiations to implement the September 2005 Joint Statement and bring North Korea into compliance with applicable Security Council resolutions through irreversible steps leading to denuclearization," Stevens said.

The North Korean nuclear problem was the subject of six-nation negotiations between Russia, the United States, China, Japan, and South and North Koreas. The negotiations were frozen a few years ago but bilateral contacts continued.
