Chinese minister: Beijing, Moscow developing antiterrorism cooperation

BEIJING/MOSCOW. April 6 (Interfax) - China and Russia have similar tasks in the fight against terrorism and are constantly developing and improving antiterrorism methods, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Interfax shortly before his visit to Russia.

"China and Russia, which are facing similar challenges in the fight against terrorism, have reached a number of agreements. Exchange and interaction in this field have been constantly deepening in recent years. The antiterrorism fight is becoming an important element of bilateral relations, strategic interaction and partnership," he said.

A bilateral agreement on cooperation in the fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism was signed in 2010 "to lay down a solid foundation for antiterrorism cooperation between China and Russia," Wang said.

In his words, bilateral cooperation has been successful: departments of the two foreign ministries are holding antiterrorism consultations and law enforcement authorities are exchanging information.

The sides are closely collaborating in the defense of their security interests at the United Nations, the SCO, the Global Counterterrorism Forum and other multilateral formats.

"China is ready to upgrade antiterrorism cooperation with Russia in the existing bilateral and multilateral formats for the sake of security and development of both countries," Wang said.
