Resolution on humanitarian pauses for Yemen must be adopted immediately - Gatilov

MOSCOW. April 6 (Interfax) - Moscow seeks early adoption by the UN Security Council of the Russia-proposed draft resolution on humanitarian pauses in Yemen to allow civilian evacuations and humanitarian aid supplies.

"This is an extremely urgent issue. The resolution must be adopted as soon as possible in order to ease the humanitarian situation in Yemen," Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told Interfax.

"But there is no talk about a vote for now, because experts of the delegations are discussing elements of our draft. We are not setting any date for the vote," he said.

The Russia-proposed draft "is urging humanitarian pauses in Yemen, given the humanitarian disaster unfolding in that country as a result of military operations," he said.

"We find it necessary to send a call for introducing humanitarian pauses to all the parties. This would allow an evacuation of those who want to leave Yemen in this hard period ,and to guarantee humanitarian aid supplies," Gatilov said.

"The International Committee of the Red Cross has paid attention to this situation already and issued a call, as we did, to introduce humanitarian pauses immediately in order to aid the victims. This is the idea of our initiative in the UN Security Council," the Russian diplomat said.
