Minsk agreements on Donbas need to be implemented, not supplemented by new ideas - Lavrov

MOSCOW. April 9 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov insists that the Minsk agreements on settling the crisis in southeastern Ukraine need to be implemented rather than supplemented with new initiatives.

"The main objective that is facing us all, including the European Union and all European institutions, is to secure the full and comprehensive implementation of the February 12 Minsk agreements by strictly adhering to their sequence rather than trying to distract attention by some new initiatives," Lavrov told journalists following a meeting with Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders in Moscow on Thursday.

"I've already heard some ideas, like, let's start deepening the Minsk agreements. We'll never finish the deepening and expansion process. Everything is clearly written there, and the most important thing is to make all parties strictly implement them," Lavrov said with reference to the provisions of the Minsk agreements.

Ukraine had earlier proposed sending international peacekeepers to southeastern Ukraine and expanding the Minsk agreements.
