Suspected killer of Gyumri family declared sane - source

MOSCOW/YEREVAN. April 9 (Interfax) - Russian serviceman Valery Permyakov who is suspected of killing seven members of a family in the Armenian city of Gyumri has been declared sane, a source familiar with the situation told Interfax.

"The serviceman has undergone psychiatric evaluation on orders from a detective and has been declared sane. He was fully aware of his actions at the moment of the crime," the source said.

In his words, the examination has been done on the premises of Russia's military base in Gyumri where Permyakov is incarcerated. "Experts have found certain abnormalities and mental disorders but on the whole pronounced him sane," the source said.

The serviceman would have been exempted from criminal liability and committed to a mental hospital by court if he had been pronounced insane, the source continued. "Now it is possible to definitively indict him, to approve the bill of indictment, and to refer the case to court," he said.

Russian and Armenian officials said earlier that the Permyakov trial would be held at the 102nd Russian base in Armenia's Gyumri in open door sessions.

Seven members of the Avetisyan family, including two babies, were murdered in northern Armenia on January 12. Permyakov pleaded guilty of the high-profile felony.
