Council of Europe may play role in prisoner exchange in eastern Ukraine - Belgian foreign minister
MOSCOW. April 9 (Interfax) - The Council of Europe can play an important role in defending human rights in Ukraine and promote prisoner exchange in Donbas, Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, who chairs the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, said.
Reynders told a press conference following a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that the Council of Europe can play its role in the sphere of human rights protection, but is having some problems accessing various regions.
Reynders said he is hoping the Council of Europe will be granted such access to Donbas and other regions, not only in Ukraine, but also, for example, in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, where it could also conduct monitoring.
Reynders also said the Council of Europe can play a role in prisoner exchange between the conflict parties in Ukraine.
He said the Council of Europe is closely following this process, adding that he would be glad to get certain news about different prisoners, specifically, Nadia Savchenko.
