Jihadist threat to Europe from south cannot be opposed without Russia - Greek PM

MOSCOW. April 9 (Interfax) - Europe will be unable to oppose the threat of Islamist radicals without Russia, says Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

An asymmetric Jihadist threat is emanating from the south, and this danger cannot be opposed without cooperation with Russia, Tsipras said at a meeting with a Russian State Duma delegation led by speaker Sergei Naryshkin in Moscow on Thursday.

Tsipras insisted that the threat posed to Europe by radical Islamist forces is incomparable to the threat allegedly posed by Russia.

Considering the tension that is rising in the European region, Greece would like to act as a bridge between the European Union, whose member it is, and Russia, Tsipras said.

Bilateral relations in such areas as energy, trade, tourism and culture are important for this and should help form a common framework of stability in a broad sense of the word, because both Greece and Cyprus are a field of stability in an unstable region, which includes Ukraine, Tsipras said.
