Rosatom may take part in building Indonesian research reactor - Manturov

KAZAN. April 9 (Interfax) - Rosatom may take part in building an experimental, 10-megawatt nuclear reactor in Indonesia, Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said at the 10th meeting of the joint Russian-Indonesian intergovernmental commission on trade, economic and technical cooperation.

"We confirm the readiness of the Russian side to develop cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Russia possesses reliable technologies and cutting-edge developing in this area and is ready to participate in creation of nuclear power facilities in Indonesia," he said.

The two countries have an agreement on nuclear energy cooperation that entered force in 2011, Manturov said. "We also welcome the participation of Russian state corporation Rosatom in the tender to equip Indonesia with an experimental, 10-megawatt nuclear power reactor," he said.

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Sofyan Djalil said his government has plans to build a research reactor, although for the time being there are differences of opinion concerning project implementation. However, he said, Indonesia expects to resolve the issue.

Rosatom previously spoke in favor of building a nuclear power plant in Indonesia.

Rosatom chief Sergei Kirienko said that the geography of nuclear power plant construction had shifted from the developed countries, such as the U.S. and countries in Europe, to emerging markets: China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, as well as countries in North Africa.
