Moscow expecting EU, OSCE reaction to Vilnius decision to suspend broadcast of Russian TV channel

MOSCOW. April 9 (Interfax) - Moscow is expecting an immediate reaction from the European Union and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to the decision by Vilnius to suspend the broadcast in Lithuania of the Russian RTR-Planeta television channel, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"We are convinced that this situation deserves an immediate public reaction on the part of Brussels, as well as the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media," the ministry said in a commentary posted on its website on Thursday.

This situation is "an obvious gross violation by Vilnius of Lithuania's international obligations in the field of freedom of expression and access to information," the ministry said.

"This is an extremely dangerous situation in Lithuania, with the media being oppressed and journalists persecuted. Effectively, the country introduced full-scale political censure incompatible with the principles of a democratic state, the ministry said.
