Ukraine relies on U.S. support in getting all parties to honor Minsk accords - Poroshenko

KYIV. April 9 (Interfax) - President Petro Poroshenko has said that Ukraine is hoping for support of the United States to ensure all sides fully comply with the Minsk agreements.

"The president noted that Ukraine is doing all it can to comply with the Minsk agreements and counts on the U.S. support to ensure compliance by all sides," the Ukrainian president's press office said after Poroshenko met with U.S. Senator (Republican) Robert Portman in Kyiv on Thursday.

For his part, the senator said that he favors greater U.S. involvement on the issue of ensuring compliance with the Minsk agreements. He said the U.S. administration must take steps not just to introduce military training programs but to increase the defensive capabilities of the Ukrainian army.

Portman also stressed the importance of further financial support for Ukrainian reforms.

Poroshenko thanked the senator for his personal stance on the need to support Ukraine more actively.

The Ukrainian head of state particularly stressed the need to introduce an international peacekeeping mission "to ensure the stability of the peace process."

"Ukraine is now campaigning for global security and global democracy. If we lose this battle, so will global security," the president said.
