Lukashenko: chief message of WWII victory is that war is unacceptable
MINSK. April 11 (Interfax) - Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has insisted that it should be the chief message of the victory over Nazi Germany during World War II that war is unacceptable.
"Why are we so actively involved in trying to normalize processes in Ukraine? It isn't a war somewhere in the Middle East or something, it's a war next door to us. So we can't let this conflict escalate," a statement from the president's office quoted Lukashenko as saying during a visit to a university in Minsk.
"The great victory is our legacy, a great asset that we have recorded in our history," Lukashenko said.
"As far as I'm concerned, it firmly stays in my memory. We must by no means lose this great victory. But attempts are made to take it away from us in one way or another. Moreover, attempts are made to declare us to be nearly guilty of unleashing World War II. So for me it's the main point that this victory should stay in your memory and the memory of your children," he said.
