Pakistan, Russia have similar approaches to crisis in Yemen, decision should be political - Pakistani minister

MOSCOW. April 15 (Interfax) - Russia and Pakistan favor diplomatic, not military methods of resolving the conflict in Yemen, Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, who has come to Moscow to attend a security conference, said.

"We have reached an agreement to intensify our efforts to reach a diplomatic solution to the region's problems, especially the conflicts in the Middle East, Persian Gulf and Yemen. Military action will not resolve the conflict, diplomacy should be given a chance. Especially in Yemen, the conflict should be resolved using diplomatic efforts," Asif told reporters on Wednesday following negotiations with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

He said both sides have emphasized during the negotiations that a peaceful solution should be found to the crisis in Yemen.

"We are hoping for an expansion of the role of Russia in achieving peace in this region," the Pakistani minister said.

The 4th Moscow conference on international security will be held in Moscow's Hotel Ukraina on April 16-17. The main topic of the conference will be 'Global Security: Challenges and Prospects'.
