USSR attempts to impose its model on E. European countries were mistake - Putin

MOSCOW. April 16 (Interfax) - The Soviet Union's attempts to impose its model of development on some Eastern European countries following WWII were a mistake, says Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"We tried to impose our model of development on a lot of Eastern European countries following WWII, and we did this by force, too. This needs to be acknowledged. And there is nothing good in this, and this has backfired on us today," Putin said during a Q&A session on Thursday.

"The Americans are behaving similarly these days in trying to impose their model virtually around the world," Putin said. "They're also going to fail," he said.
