Russia to restart funded portion of pension system in 2016

MOSCOW. April 23 (Interfax) - The funded portion of Russia's pension system will start working as usual in 2016.

A decision to this effect was made at a meeting with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday, national daily Kommersant reported on Wednesday evening, citing sources.

An Interfax source familiar with the discussions also said that a decision has been made in favor of keeping the funded portion of the pension system.

Business daily Vedomosti reported sources as saying that the funded portion of the system will start up again in 2016 without any further moratoriums or freezes. However, sources close to the government's social policy team claim that a decision has not been made yet and that another meeting will be held on the issue on April 29, the paper said.

However, the government is scheduled to approve an updated social and economic forecast and scenarios for the three-year budget planning period at a meeting on Thursday, so if a decision had not been made on such a crucial issue as the funded portion of the pension system, consideration of the macro forecast would probably have been postponed as well, a government source told Interfax. It has already been postponed once before.
