U.S. readying for various unilateral military operations abroad - Russian General Staff
MOSCOW. April 24 (Interfax-AVN) - Although not one United States Army operation, in various conflict zones, is held according to a well-established pattern, in all cases it was the aerospace operations that defined the course and outcome of wars, says Col. Gen. Igor Sergun, the chief of the Main Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff.
"Warfare in modern conflicts has become prominently aerial-naval. The role of the main attack forces has been finally taken over by aviation, including deck-based and warships armed with cruise missiles," he told a military science conference in Moscow on Friday.
The U.S. could use its military force simultaneously in several regional conflicts, he said.
"According to the views of the American leaders, direct use of military force by the United States might be necessary in several simultaneous regional conflicts affecting U.S. interests. It is believed that the U.S. Armed Force must be capable to defeat an enemy in a large-scale operation in one part of the world while assuredly restraining yet another aggressor elsewhere. Therefore, the U.S. armed forces are preparing for unilateral operations in unrelated theaters of war mainly outside its national territory," Sergun said.
It was reported earlier that the main purpose of the conference, held by the Defense Ministry in Moscow, is to outline priorities in improving the Russian defense based on the experience of the Second World War and other military conflicts of the 20th and 21st centuries, given the development of means and methods of conventional and unconventional warfare.
