Kazakh presidential elections held in strict compliance with law - CIS mission chief

ASTANA. April 27 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan's presidential elections were held in strict compliance with the Kazakh legislation regulating the election process, CIS election observation mission chief, CIS Executive Committee Chairman - Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev said.

"Our main criterion of elections appraisal is the compliance of the elections with the laws of the country where they [the elections] are held. I am pleased to verify that the elections were held in strict compliance with the Kazakh legislation regulating the election process," he told Interfax in Astana on Monday.

"I would like to add that Kazakhstan's legislation is being constantly improved and I am absolutely positive that it meets the universally recognized international norms of election laws," Lebedev added.

Kazakhstan held the early presidential elections on April 26. The Central Elections Commission said in a tentative report that incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbayev won 97.7% of the vote. The election turnout stood at 95.22%.
