Fire at Rostov region training range extinguished
ROSTOV-ON-DON. April 28 (Interfax-AVN) - The fire at an Armed Forces training range in Russia's southern Rostov region after ammunition of a self-propelled artillery system detonated there has already been extinguished, Southern Military District spokesman Col. Igor Gorbul told Interfax on Tuesday.
"There is no threat to residential areas located near the training range," the officer said.
"Firefighters and two army helicopters are still pouring water over the territory and smoke pockets," he said.
"Special-purpose engineer equipment is being used to clear up the area," Gorbul said.
A short circuit triggered a fire inside a self-propelled artillery system as units of the Southern Military District prepared to hold drills at a training range near the village of Kuzminki, Rostov region, on Tuesday morning, Gorbul said earlier.
The crew of this combat vehicle promptly evacuated to safety. The fire caused the system's ammunition to explode. No one was hurt in the accident.
