No more stockpiled or spent nuclear fuel left in Far East - Kiriyenko

MOSCOW. May 5 (Interfax) - Russian State Nuclear Energy Company Rosatom has completely finished removing spent nuclear fuel from decommissioned nuclear sites in the Far East, and the company has started doing the same in the north of Russia, the head of Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"We completed an important task in 2014. You decided to give us the responsibility of dismantling submarines that have been decommissioned, as well as old fuel. During Soviet times, a lot had been accumulated, especially in the Far East. We finished this last year, removing the last spent fuel assembly, including stockpiled fuel," Kiriyenko said.

"There is no more stockpiled or spent fuel left in the Far East," he added.

"Our 41st train left that was loaded with fuel," Kiriyenko said, adding that the same would take place in the North.

"This is a lot of work that has been carried out over many years, and really, it has seriously improved the ecological situation in the Far East," Putin said.
