Russian, Chinese naval forces to conduct joint exercises in Mediterranean

MOSCOW. May 5 (Interfax-AVN) - Over 10 warships of different classes of the Russian Navy and the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) will be engaged in the Naval Interaction 2015 joint naval exercises to take place in the Mediterranean from May 11 to 21, the Russian Defense Ministry press service reports.

"The active phase of the exercises will take place in the Mediterranean. The objective of the joint exercises is the protection of navigation security in remote areas of the world's oceans. The main purpose of the Russian-Chinese naval exercises Naval Interaction 2015 is to further deepen friendly and practical interaction between the two countries and step up joint counteraction to threats to marine security at sea," the Defense Ministry said in a statement shared with Interfax-AVN on Tuesday.

The exercises are not directed against a third party and are not related to the political situation in the region, it said.
