World should use unified parameters for conflict assessment - Putin

MOSCOW. May 10 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has called on global community to work out unified criteria for assessing global events, including conflict.

"We should have common criteria and reactions to the events taking place across the world, unified ones under the unified rules," Putin told a press conference held jointly with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

He mentioned the situation in Yemen. "There is a coup there, the president has relinquished power, and other countries with which we have good relations want his forces and weapons back. And they call all this a coup. After the coup was staged in Ukraine, we heard so many criticisms against its former president Yanukovych and saw all kinds of support provided to those who staged that coup," Putin said.

"If we approach same things with such different standards, then we will never be able to agree on anything," the president said.

"What we must finally assert in international affairs is not the right of 'the strong one' or the right of 'the fist' but the principles of international law that are being understood uniformly and protected by entire international community," Putin said.
