Moscow calls on Washington to give up mentoring tone on human rights issues
MOSCOW. May 12 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry agreed with the United Nations Human Rights Council in that the human rights situation in the U.S. is worsening and called on the U.S. to work on resolving this problem.
"At a meeting in Geneva on May 11, the United Nations Human Rights Council discussed the human rights situation in the U.S. within the framework of a universal periodic review procedure. The countries of the UN stated that the human rights situation in that country is worsening, the Russian ministry said in a commentary released on Tuesday.
"Specifically, police arbitrariness and an increase in racism and xenophobia were mentioned. These issues are especially vital in regard of the incidents in Ferguson, Baltimore and other U.S. cities where the authorities toughly suppress mass protests against unjustified and excessive use of police by police," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in its commentary.
The Russian ministry said it is hoping that criticism by the international community should still make the U.S. administration pay attention to the increasing number of human rights problems in the country and work closely on resolving them.
"To do that, the U.S. will need to give up its mentoring approaches and ideas of their exclusivity and impeccability, which are far from reality," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
