Ukraine's anticorruption bureau to have own law enforcement structure
KYIV. May 18 (Interfax) - A law enforcement structure, attached to the Ukrainian National Anticorruption Bureau (NAB) and led by NAB Deputy Director Anatoliy Novak, will detain suspects on its own and ensure the security of the parties involved in criminal investigations.
Novak has experience fighting in Donbas.
"Our law enforcement service will be responsible for detentions. We will not turn to anyone to detain suspects. Our law enforcement unit will do this," NAB Director Artyom Sytnyk said at a press briefing in Kyiv on Monday.
He said this unit will guard NAB personnel and citizens who figure in criminal inquiries. "If we see that a person involved in a criminal inquiry is in need of physical or other forms of protection, the structure to be led by the newly appointed deputy Anatoliy Novak will have a special unit in charge of maintaining security for parties in criminal inquiries," Sytnyk said.
He also said that the NAB's detective bureau will have 255 personnel, including 12 holding leading positions. There will be senior detectives to be selected in a tough recruitment competition. These people will investigate concrete criminal cases, he said.
Reports said earlier that the NAB announced a competition on May 5 to recruit the first 100 detectives. There are two mandatory qualifications each candidate must meet: a university degree in law and an experience of two years in the legal profession.
