Russia maintains measured viewpoint on Korean reunification, favors diplomatic solution - Naryshkin

SEOUL. May 19 (Interfax) - Moscow is interested in promoting confidence building measures on the Korean Peninsula and the phased reunification of the Korean nation, State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin has said in Seoul.

"Russia adheres to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and [promoting] confidence building measures, with the eventual shift towards reunification of the Korean nation," Naryshkin said at a roundtable dedicated to historical and cultural dimensions of Russian-Korean relations on Tuesday.

A Russian parliament delegation led by the State Duma speaker is paying an official visit to the Republic of Korea.

Russia is maintaining a measured viewpoint on Korean reunification, Naryshkin said. "We stand for a political and diplomatic solution to the Korean problem," the speaker said.

In his words, Russia is absolutely indisposed to pool efforts with a part of the Korean Peninsula for pressuring the other part.

"We adhere to the balance of interests and are inclined to build our policy together with the Korean partners, both in the North and the South, and to promote gradual progress towards the reunification of the Korean nation," the State Duma speaker said.

Moscow will render full support to "gradual progress towards the reunification of the Korean nation", which it sees as promising, Naryshkin assured the audience.
