Italy promises Ukrainian FM to carry on anti-Russian sanctions

KYIV. May 27 (Interfax) - Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni reaffirmed the readiness of the Italian government to carry on the EU policy of sanctions against Russia until the complete fulfillment of the Minsk agreements at negotiations with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry press service said.

It said Klimkin had informed his Italian counterpart about violations of the ceasefire regime in Donbas.

The Italian minister said that Rome would continue to apply the EU sanctions policy on Russia until the Minsk deal was implemented and expressed the intention to render comprehensive support to Ukraine. He also noted the importance of profound structural reforms held by Kyiv, the report said.

Klimkin and Gentiloni confirmed the wish to re-launch the Ukrainian-Italian Council on Economic, Industrial and Financial Cooperation and agreed to hold its next meeting in October.

At the end of the debate on the ratification of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement, the Ukrainian side was assured that the issue would be put on the agenda and discussed by the Italian parliament already next month.
