IS threat growing in Central Asia - Lavrov

MOSCOW. June 4 (Interfax) - The threat posed by the Islamic State (IS) extremist organization in Central Asia continues to grow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said.

"IS units have already taken a firm foothold in Afghanistan, including its northern regions located near the borders of Central Asia. In these circumstances, one of the most crucial tasks facing the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is to coordinate political efforts to help restore peace and stability in Afghanistan," he told a conference addressing ways to maintain security and stability in the SCO region in Moscow on Thursday.
