Russian student Karaulova may have been detained in Turkey

MOSCOW. June 5 (Interfax) - Moscow State University (MGU) philosophy student Varvara Karaulova, who could have been recruited by radical Islamists, is believed to have been detained in Turkey.

"Information has been released that a young woman who looks like Varya judging by the identikit portrait has been detained. Her identity is currently being established," Alexander Karabanov, a lawyer for the Karaulov family, told Interfax.

The girl was detained in Turkey when trying to cross the border, he said.

"A serious operation to look for Karaulova" has been under way in Turkey for the past few days, Karabanov said.

Karabanov told Interfax on June 2 that Varvara Karaulova, a second-year MGU philosophy student who went missing five days ago after succumbing to radical Islamist ideas, had been put on the international search list.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said earlier that Istanbul's police had officially confirmed this Russian citizen's arrival in Turkey on May 27.
