Moscow backs idea to hold Yemen consultations in Geneva on June 14 without preconditions

MOSCOW. June 9 (Interfax) - Russia has backed the idea of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to hold consultations on the Yemen situation in Geneva on June 14 without preconditions.

"Moscow supports the UN initiative. We think that this event should involve all Yemeni sides and be held without preconditions," the Russian Foreign Ministry information and press department has said in a commentary.

"A primary objective of the Geneva consultations is to elaborate urgent measures, which will ensure long-term humanitarian pauses at the initial stage [of the settlement process] and help stop the armed conflict in Yemen within a short period," the document said.

The ministry expressed hope that the Geneva meeting would pave the way towards an inclusive dialogue of the Yemenis and a lasting settlement based on UN Security Council resolutions, the initiatives of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf and its executive mechanism, the National Dialogue Conference, and the Peace and National Partnership Agreement.
