Russia appreciates 'measured attitude' of China to Ukraine problem - Matviyenko
MOSCOW. June 9 (Interfax) - Federation Council Chairperson Valentina Matviyenko is expecting the visit of Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, to give a fresh impetus to relations between the Russian and Chinese parliaments.
Matviyenko told Zhang on Tuesday that bilateral relations were entering a new level of strategic partnership in every area and called for "further expansion of contacts and new interaction channels."
Moscow appreciates the 'measured attitude' of China to the events evolving in southeastern Ukraine.
"Since the very first day, Russia has been insisting on the absence of a military solution to this conflict and the need for political settlement and strict compliance with the Minsk agreements. It has pledged to do the utmost for the fulfillment of these accords and the peaceful resolution of the situation," Matviyenko said.
Zhang said he was confident that the people of Russia "were able to overcome the ongoing problems."
"We are optimistic about Russia's development. Bilateral cooperation has been rather successful, for instance, between the two parliaments," Zhang said.
