Russian serviceman detained on suspicion of killing colleague in Armenia's Gyumri
YEREVAN. June 15 (Interfax) - A serviceman from the Russian military base in Armenia has been detained on suspicion of killing his colleague, the Armenian media has reported with reference to Col. Alexei Polyukhovich, the military base's deputy commander.
"A serviceman has been detained on suspicion of killing serviceman Ivan Novikov. Investigators are working with him. He is giving testimony. I cannot give you the name of the detainee," Polyukhovich said.
Novikov's killing was preceded by a fight involving three servicemen from the Russian military base, local media said.
It was reported earlier that a serviceman from the Russian 102nd military base in Armenia had been found dead on Monday morning.
"The body of serviceman Ivan Novikov was found near the Mother Armenia monument in Gyumri. There are stab and slash wounds on the body of the deceased," Armenian Investigative Committee press secretary Sona Truzian told Interfax.
A criminal case has been opened on murder charges, she said.
"All the necessary measures have been taken to determine all circumstances of the incident," she said.
