Radioactive waste storage facility near Donetsk could be damaged - Ukrainian side of JCCC
KYIV. June 22 (Interfax) - The condition of the radioactive waste storage facility, which is located in an area controlled by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), is a cause for major concern, Major-General Andriy Taran, the head of the Ukrainian side of the Joint Control and Coordination Center (JCCC), said.
Taran said during a meeting with representatives of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) on June 20 that the storage facility could have been damaged as a result of the detonation of underground ammunition warehouses, the press center for the special operation said on Facebook on Sunday.
"A radioactive waste storage facility is located between the village of Piski and the coal mine Oktyabrskaya, not far from the Donetsk airport, where, as we known, active military action has recently occurred. The powerful explosion that recently occurred on the territory of the Donetsk chemical plant on June 16 was caused by the detonation of the underground ammunition warehouses and could have damaged it [the facility]," Taran told the SMM.
Taran reiterated that this situation is a cause for major concern to Ukraine because there is a possibility of radiation leak, which is very dangerous to the health and life of many civilians in the region.
"We will be thankful to OSCE SMM officials for monitoring the radiation levels in the area," he said.
