NAC confirms death of two militants, one officer in Dagestan
MOSCOW. June 23 (Interfax) - Two militants have been killed in a special operation in Dagestan and a law enforcement agency officer has suffered a lethal injury, the National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC) information center has reported.
"Investigative activity of the Federal Security Service and the Interior Ministry of Russia provided information about the presence of a group of armed persons involved in terrorist crimes in the village of Gimry in the Untsukul district of the Republic of Dagestan," a source in the NAC information center told Interfax on Tuesday.
The head of the NAC operative staff in Dagestan decided to launch an antiterrorism operation and to put into place a relevant legal regime in the aforementioned area starting at 3 a.m.
The militants hid in a dugout in a gorge, 200 meters from the village. Special purpose troops of the Federal Security Service and the Interior Ministry besieged the dugout. Necessary forces and means were deployed to the site.
"The militants were offered to lay down arms but instead of doing so they opened fire on law enforcement officers and lethally injured one of them. Then it was decided to begin the active phase of the special operation, during which, according to the preliminary data, two militants were neutralized," NAC said, reporting the absence of civilian casualties.
