Ban Ki-moon to present anti-extremism action plan this year
ULAN-UDE. June 25 (Interfax) - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is set to present an action plan for the prevention of extremism.
Ban said in his message to delegates to the sixth international meeting of High Representatives on Security Issues that he would present the action plan for the prevention of violent extremism to the UN General Assembly later in 2015 for promoting international unity based on common principles which violent extremists were trying to undermine.
Terrorist organizations, such as ISIL, Boko Haram and Ash-Shabaab, are creating big problems by their involvement in complex and multidimensional conflicts that have local, regional and global consequences, the UN secretary-general said.
Security measures or even military operations may be necessary, but efforts in fighting terrorism which are at variance with common values are destructive and counterproductive, he said. Missiles can kill terrorists but good governance can help do away with terrorism itself, Ban emphasized.
The conference is taking place in Ulan-Ude under the aegis of the Russian Security Council. UN Office on Drugs and Crime Executive Director Yuri Fedotov read out Ban's message.
