Pentagon's new military doctrine contains confrontational provisions regarding Russia - Kremlin spokesman
MOSCOW. July 2 (Interfax) - Some wordings of the Pentagon's new military strategy are not conducive to the normalization of Russian-U.S. relations, says Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Peskov commented on the publication of a new U.S. national military strategy by the Pentagon, which denotes Russia as a revisionist state that "has repeatedly demonstrated that it does not respect the sovereignty of its neighbors and it is willing to use force to achieve its goals."
"As concerns this information, I can express my regret here, because a security concept is a document intended for the midterm and long term, and the appearance of such wordings in this document signals a confrontational attitude lacking any impartiality in relation to our country in the long term," Peskov said.
"Definitely, this is unlikely to promote attempts to direct our bilateral relations toward normalization, which is so necessary to jointly combat the existing challenges, to which countries cannot find an answer on their own," he said.
These challenges include the Islamic State's dangerous emergence and other manifestations of terrorism, Peskov said.
Asked how the U.S. could be characterized in a new edition of Russia's national security concept, which is being drawn up now, Peskov suggested that it would be appropriate to wait until the document is finalized.
"Certainly, all threats to Russia's national security are being taken into consideration, they are being analyzed, and relevant countermeasures will be envisioned," he said.
