Crimea's head sees no need for new referendum on reconnection with Russia

MOSCOW. July 4 (Interfax) - The head of the Republic of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, has said he sees no need to hold a new referendum on Crimea's reconnection with Russia.

"We see no need to prove anything to anyone. A legitimate referendum took place in Crimea. Any recent public opinion surveys, including those conducted by international research companies, show that Crimean residents fully trust the Russian state today," Aksyonov wrote on his Facebook account.

But even if such a referendum were held today, the overwhelming majority of people living on the peninsula would vote in favor of reuniting with Russia, he said.

"But I personally do not see such a need," he said.

Certain media outlets reported earlier, citing a high-ranking European source, that the European Union allegedly might agree to consider the results of a new referendum in Crimea if such a vote would be monitored by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
