Volgograd regional football federation nominates Russian Sports Minister Mutko for Russian Football Union president

MOSCOW. July 7 (Sport-Express/Interfax) - The bureau of the executive committee of the Volgograd regional football federation unanimously voted on Tuesday to nominate Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko for president of the Russian Football Union (RFU), the Rotor football club press service reports.

Delegates to an RFU conference on May 31 terminated Nikolai Tolstykh's mandate as its president early and appointed First Vice President Nikita Simonyan acting president.

An RFU president will be elected at the union's conference on September 2. Candidates for the position must submit the relevant documents not later than July 24.

The RFU elections committee will consider the candidacies by July 27, and the final list of candidates is supposed to be forwarded to FIFA, the international football governing body, not later than July 29.

State Duma Deputy Chairman Igor Lebedev was first to be registered as a candidate for RFU president. He was nominated by the Smolensk regional football federation.

Former head coach of the CSKA football club and the Russian national football team Valery Gazzayev had earlier aired his intention to run for RFU president as well.
