Georgia hopes to bring back citizens jailed in Russia for spying

TBILISI. July 9 (Interfax) - The Georgian prime minister's special representative for relations with Russia, Zurab Abashidze, said he hopes that the issue of bringing back several Georgian citizens convicted in Russia for espionage will be settled before the end of this year.

"There are some humanitarian issues, particularly our citizens are serving terms in prison for espionage [in Russia]. We have already brought back three our citizens. I hope that this year we will probably close this list and will resolve this problem," Abashidze told reporters on Thursday, when asked which issues would be discussed at his forthcoming meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin in Prague on July 15.

In addition, trade relations and highway links between Georgia and Russia will be discussed, the Georgian premier's envoy said.

"For instance, I will say concretely that some types of our products cannot enter the Russian market yet, and we want this problem to be solved as quickly as possible. This is animal products, particularly fish and some others," Abashidze said.
