Right Sector radicals claim weapons used in Mukacheve "captured in battle"
KYIV. July 12 (Interfax) - During an incident in the city of Mukacheve in Zakarpattia Region, members of Right Sector (RS), an extremist organization banned in Russia, used weapons that were "captured in battle and unreportable," said Alexei Byk, a spokesman for the RS 13th battalion.
"All the weapons that were there were our trophy weapons that we captured in battle. They were neither stolen, nor issued to us by the state, we are not accountable to anyone for them," he said at a briefing in Kyiv on Sunday.
The Ukrainian law allows a firearm possession when the country is in danger, Byk said. "If your question is whether people are allowed to carry weapons and walk in the street during a war, I will tell you: paradoxically, the Ukrainian law does allow it. Article 65 of our Constitution stipulates that a Ukrainian citizen is obligated to defend his home country at a time when it is in danger. Article 39 of the Criminal Code speaks of the obliging necessity, i.e. it allows violating certain law-enforcement regulations to avoid much serious consequences," he said.
"In other words, by violating the firearm law, we thereby defend the very existence of this state. We therefore believe that we don't need extra permits to carry weapons at a time when Ukraine is at war," the spokesman said.
When asked by journalists how many fighters and weapons were in Mukacheve, he said he could not disclose this information, saying only that the group that left the conflict scene had received reinforcements.
"We cannot disclose the exact number of RS fighters
