Tajik Drug Control Agency seizes almost 200kg of drugs
DUSHANBE. July 13 (Interfax) - The Tajik President's Drug Control Agency seized 192 kilograms of drugs in two operations held last weekend.
"Two successful operations against drug traffickers held in Dushanbe and the Khatlon region [in the south of the republic bordering Afghanistan] resulted in the confiscation of the following narcotic substances: 98.7 kilograms of opium, 77 kilograms of marijuana, and 16.3 kilograms of hashish," the Agency press service said on Monday.
A number of Tajik citizens have been detained on suspicion of their involvement in the crimes and a few more people have been put on the most wanted list, among them two citizens of Afghanistan.
The Agency has not disclosed details of the operations as it is hoping "to apprehend wanted citizens of Afghanistan and Tajikistan shortly; their whereabouts are known."
Tajikistan shares the longest border with Afghanistan amongst CIS member countries at 1,344 kilometers.
Tajikistan is a transit route for Afghan drugs smuggled into Russia and Eastern and Western Europe. Tajikistan seized 6.2 tonnes of drugs in 2014, or 7.1% less than in the previous year.
